COUCHING THE STANDARDS DEBATE IN HISTORICAL TERMS: Developing a dialectical understanding of the standards debate through historical awareness

The need to couch the standard’s debate within historical context and develop a Marxist analysis of the role of capitalism and schooling is essential.  Too much time has been expended fighting standards for almost one century.  It is time to understand that capitalism has no interest in education of its population.  For its administrators and […]

NEA leader says social justice key to teacher unionism

There is little doubt that what American workers need right now are working people’s organizations that can serve as forums for struggle.  This once occured within unions but the union movement in this country has been severely compromised by virulent right wing attacks and a clubby union leadership wishing access to power. Bob Peterson, the […]

Billionaire boyz club plans to buy D.C. teachers hits a snag?

Things not going well for billionaire plan to take over Washington, D.C. Schools As history indicates, it has taken less than a year to cobble together the naked takeover of public education and the merit pay ruse in Washington D.C.  Chancellor of Schools in D. C. Michelle Rhee is implacable, beyond expression when it comes […]

Another Big School Anti-Privatization Victory today for teachers, students, parents, and the citizens of Detroit!

With the successful march on Washington, April 10, 2010 in front of Arne’s cubbyhole and the recent victories handed to BAM and Detroit Schools, Arne Duncan and his cronies must have their underwear in a knot. City by city they had been having their way but now that the forces, mostly made up of students and teachers, are standing up to Race to the Top and catching whiff of the negative consequences of the flawed policy, Duncan must feel frustrated.

Help us, please! We are your kids!

Arne Duncan and his billionaire boyz club have been operating in secrecy for too long. It is time to make this a national debate, demand MSNBC and CNN, the corporate press, to cover this issue with the same exhaustive and energetic coverage they give to ‘C’ Street’ or the daily news of the republican and democratic shenanigans.

Fighting the corporate sludge: High school students organize to protest privatization in D.C. while The Walton Family ponies up $25,000,000 for merit pay

You might remember ‘Jamal’ from my article on Detroit Public schools, “Corporate Barbarians at the Gate: Wal-Mart internships at Detroit Schools” (http://dailycensored.com/2010/03/06/corporate-barbarians-at-the-gate-wal-mart-internships-at-detroit-schools/). Jamal is the high school student who fought against and continues to fight against the Wal-martization of schools, both in Detroit and now nationally. I gave him the anonymous name, Jamal in my article, so as not to put him in a position of probable reprisals from smarmy administrators, private Pinkertons and politicians looking to punish kids for standing up for their human rights.

EDUCATION REFORM IS THE BEST STOCK ON THE MARKET

By Guest Blogger George Thompson Numerous corporations such as Microsoft and ETS (Education Testing Service) use philanthropy to influence education policies in such a way as to create demands for their products. To take but one example of how this works, consider how Pearson PLC, is expanding its current markets through the push for national […]

BRAINWASHING IN OUR CHARTER SCHOOLS

As the privatization of education moves with unprecedented zeal, under the blind eyes of the nation’s corporate media, more and more one can begin to see the ideological threats to American students and American social culture.  As Texas wrangles with new textbooks that substitute John Calvin for Thomas Jefferson, many corporate charter chains are now […]
