Obama's Opposition to the Fairness Doctrine is Bad News
Dennis Loo writes that President Obama’s opposition to the Fairness Doctrine is very bad news. The Fairness Doctrine was an old 1949 FCC regulation that mandated equal time for opposing views on public airwaves. This week the Obama administration made it clear that they had no intention to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. This is unfortunate because the regulation would pose a major threat to the influence of right wing news talk shows like Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh. Dennis Loo states that a broadcast regulations that requires broadcasters to air contrasting viewpoints would destroy such demagogues ability to make up stuff and shamelessly distort. The Fairness Doctrine is not about censorship, it the opposite of censorship.
