Bats are getting moldy and are dying. Scientists have identified the cause of the mystery. The killer is a cold loving fungi known as Geomyces. More than 100,000 bats have died in the northeastern United States and the disease is spreading. The fungus is causing starvation amongst bats. In related reporting, where I first heard about the bat deaths, science journalist Linda Moulton Howe speculated that the bat death mystery may be related to the bee die offs. Speculation is that global warming is causing the mass die offs of amphibians, bees and now bats (one in five mammals are bats). If the bats keep dying off the insect population could explode and this could affect agriculture. Also more pesticides could be used by farmers, further endangering the bee population.
