Harrison Wills, once the Student Body President of Santa Monica College who worked for Opensecrets.org in Washington D.C. where he learned some excellent research skills has discovered the following.  Wills will be attending Whitman College soon on a full-boat scholarship.  His research is excellent and as a young student, he knows more than the teachers, union, faculty and staff at most what were once called ‘community colleges’.
From Wills:
Santa Monica College (SMC)  has a contract with the lobby firm: Strategic Education Services: see below.
Please note the lobby firm’s other clients are privatization agenda companies- Connections Academy, one of the biggest online schools is now owned by Pearson- the testing giant out of England and also the owner of the GER or high school equivalency test.
K Street Consulting is another lobby firm. (Oakland Unified is one of K Street’s clients).
There are major conflicts here between public institutions such as SMC and private education companies.   Assemblywoman, Julia Brownley has backed by privatizers such as Edvoice.   She was the assemblyman responsible for drafting and introducing AB555 last year.  The bill would have created a toll-booth system of education for city colleges.  It failed.
You may have heard that community college of San Francisco (CC SF)  is facing possible closure— by the ACCJC (see Dailycensored for more).  This is not an accident as the privatizers continue to line the pockets of government decisions makers.
The Student Success Task Force was written by individuals at California State University at Sacramento (CSU Sacramento) Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy (IHELP).   A gentleman by the name of Dr. Wesley Apker was involved in IHELP-work and IHELP is a bad actor!!!   Apker failed to disclose his economic conflicts on his required FPPC 700 form.
Take a look at the lobby activity recently and the schools represented.  Where are the unions in all of this as the schools are being cannibalized and monetized at quickening speeds?  Good question.  They seem to be in the pockets of the privatizers and on-line purveyors of Massive Open Online Classes or (MOOCs).  The MOOCs will replace tenured faculty with part time faculty and of course, they will be classes with one thousand students and one professor.
