Is the US headed for martial law?

Quite a few weapons from the US military are going to police departments throughout the US.  Benjamin Carlson at The Daily reports on a little known endeavor called the “1033 Program” that gave more than $500 million of military gear to U.S. police forces in 2011.

This upswing coincides with an increasingly military-like style of law enforcement most recently seen in the Occupy Wall Street crackdowns.

According to Carlson, 1033 was passed by Congress in 1997 to help law-enforcement fight terrorism and drugs, but despite a 40-year low in violent crime, police are buying military hardware with increasing rapidity.  Business Insider reports that his year’s staggering take by the police topped the charts, but this pales with next year’s orders that are up 400 percent over the same period (http://www.businessinsider.com/program-1033-military-equipment-police-2011-12#ixzz1ps25xjP3).

Now, add to this under-reported fact President Obama signed an executive order Friday titled “National Defense Resources Preparedness.”

The order lists items such as the power of the executive departments of the U.S. federal government and its agencies to “identify requirements for the full spectrum of emergencies, including essential military and civilian demand.” This same section, labeled “General Functions,” also enumerates these departments and agencies might ensure availability of domestic resources and industries to secure national defense.

Applying military law to private citizens first occurred December 31, 2011 when the president signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012. It included provisions that allowed the indefinite detention without charge of private citizens.

On March 8th, 2012 came the next questionable move, when the president signed into law H.R. 347, the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011 (http://www.mediafreedominternational.org/2012/03/08/h-r-347-would-make-many-forms-of-nonviolent-protest-illegal/).

Then of course one has to add the Patriot Act and other laws designed to strip US citizens of fourth ammendment rights.  Don’t forget the internet laws that have been under consideration.

The question at issue is: Is America preparing for martial law and is this part of an upcoming war with Iran?  Will military and police forces be used against American citizens?   If so, what can we do?

With a decline in resources, the cost of oil skyrocketing, the descendancy of US capitalism, unemployment, the fall of the dollar, the outsourcing of American jobs and the asset stripping of the country, the rise of the new reactionaries and the attack on working people, people of color, unions, immigrants, women and civil rights in general is the ruling class shoring up what is left of America and preparing for a new dystopic future of war and incarceration?
