“Hunger is not an issue of charity. It is an issue of justice.”
- Jacques Diouf, Food and Agricultural Organization Director-general
On January 24th, 2014 Microsoft chairman Bill Gates told Sky News in England that poverty will disappear by 2035. According to the plutocrat Gates:
“The poor have in fact been doing quite well and people really should feel good about their generosity, their role in helping things like literacy, life expectancy, childhood death rates, go down. That really is an incredible story that I think gets lost and it’s unfortunate. It’s amazing how much progress we’ve made” (http://news.sky.com/story/1200617/bill-gates-progress-on-poverty-amazing).
Gates was talking to Sky from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he was speaking on global development and poverty during the four-day event.
The Microsoft founder also sternly “warned against raising the minimum wage, saying it results in a ‘huge tradeoff’ that can adversely affect households in poverty” (http://overlawyered.com/2014/01/bill-gates-minimum-wage-hikes/).
Well, I guess, well-paying jobs aren’t the answer to poverty – we must rely on the prevarications, sentiments and largess of billionaire plutocrats like Gates to take over the world and become our new monarchical benefactors while we become mired in debt servitude. He and the other members of the tiny one percent will simply keep us strapped on the gurney of low-paid, precarious work and debt until work finally disappears owed to machines. This smacks of neo-feudalism, corporate-cyber style. Hardly creative capitalism.
The Cato Institute (read Koch Brothers) agrees with Gates, of course. Regulation, unions, increases in minimum wages, oversight, transparency all hurt the most progressive in our society (the rich, like Gates), according to the reactionary right wing institute (http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/theft-microsoft).
What planet is this man on? Today’s inequality crisis in America, to take one example, is the worst on record since statistics were first recorded a hundred years ago — the only comparison would be to the era of the railroad tycoons and the robber barons in the late 19th century.
We now live in the land of Baby Boomer New Age Mysticism under the canopy of a neo-Gilded Age where plutocrats are pled for their largess as they seek to copyright ‘the world’ in the interest of profit and control.
Gates is a believer in ‘creative capitalism’, an oxymoron if there ever was one — for it is capitalism that has increased inequality worldwide. Using terms like ‘creative capitalism’ is simply a sophistic rendering.
Teamsters Union and their fight for equality
Gates is actually creating inequality himself. Take one issue, as just one example of Gate’s real agenda: that of the Teamsters Union and their fight for equality which is never mentioned in the corporate press.
In January of 2013 the Teamster blog noted:
“But its Bill Gates who’s arousing Teamster ire this year. Business reports,
…the Microsoft cofounder is getting wealthier (but)…Microsoft stock now accounts for less than 20 percent of his fortune.
So if his wealth isn’t just from Microsoft, where does Bill Gates invest? He’s got a somewhat secretive investment company called Cascade Investment, according to documents filed with the SEC. From those filings we know that Gates owns stakes in companies like tractor maker Deere & Co; garbage collector Republic Services…
Here’s what else we know: Gates is the largest owner of Republic/Allied stock, and his investment manager is on Republic’s Board of Directors.
According to Wikipedia, his foundation:
“…is giving the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development US$1.2 million over three years to find new, sustainable ways to make water, sanitation and hygiene services safer and more affordable.
Republic/Allied Waste earns exorbitant profits through operating greenhouse gas-emitting landfills. It profits from fracking operations on its landfill property in Ohio. It operates a Missouri landfill that is currently on fire next to a nuclear waste site.
The Gates Foundation also runs a “Global Development Program” that combats extreme poverty through grants” (http://teamsternation.blogspot.com/2013/01/hey-billionaires-we-want-respect-not.html).
Bill Gates is simply a self-delusional megalomaniac and propaganda specialist. Take a look at the real facts: the horrific rates of poverty in the world, country by country: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_percentage_of_population_living_in_poverty). This poverty has been caused by years of imperialist looting and capitalist corruption. And the dreadful state of affairs is not disappearing, it is actually growing as the plundering and pilfering of resources all over the world continues at excessive rates.
According to InequalityWatch.com:
“Over the past 25 years, income inequality of OECD countries increased from 0.29 to 0.32 between the mid 1980s and late 2000s. This is a historic reversal amongst these countries, which since the Second World War seemed to progress towards more equal income distributions. For many this reversal results from an inability to reduce unemployment and create quality jobs for all. But this trend reflects different changes in depending on which countries are considered” (http://inequalitywatch.eu/spip.php?article58).
Add to this the extreme rate of unemployment growing world-wide as machines replace human labor, and then ask yourself if this multi-billionaire copyright pirate is telling the truth or if this is simply delusion and deceit compounded daily.
Bill Gates is a dangerous self-delusional social Darwinist who seeks to socially engineer the world in the interest of a tiny ruling class. He is not only out of touch with the current state of hunger and poverty in the world that has seen rapid increases within the last decade, but he is mendacious and hardly a charitable philanthropist. He expects returns on his ‘advocacy philanthropy’.
The most disgusting part of his rant on poverty is the fact that Gates is against a modicum increase in the minimum wage, both in America and abroad (http://www.mediaite.com/tv/msnbc-guest-lectures-out-of-touch-bill-gates-on-labor-minimum-wage/). As he hastily replaces people with machines and pays Asian workers pennies on the dollar for their work, Bill Gates wants us to accept $7.25 an hour for our work while he and his cronies on Wall Street and in the world make trillions. He says it is for our own good. Gates also detests unions: especially teacher unions, but all unions of any kind.
So, the Gates Foundation will continue its plutocratic philanthropic journey and poverty and plundering will continue to escalate, as will the loss of work in favor of machines and the horrific spying and data mining supported of course, by Bill Gates.
This all smells of the charitable throwback of the super-rich, characteristic of Victorian Britain, where philanthropy was displayed by the capitalist class, but not exactly in equal proportion to their self-interest or need to maximize profit. Basically this is ‘advocacy philanthropy’ to control and manage social and personal life (http://philosophersforchange.org/tag/danny-weil/). It is hardly charity.
As to ‘creative capitalism’ -this is part and parcel of the ruling class doublespeak which is all formed in reactionary think tanks, by the likes of philanthro-pirates like Bill Gates, and it is called ‘double speak’ because it is a form of mental discipline whose goal, desirable and necessary to all of those in power, is to be able to make you believe in two contradictory truths at the same time.
Also known as ‘cognitive dissonance’ double speak lies behind the ability of those in power to formulate and thus manage perceptions through the use of language. The ‘Injustice System’ in America is the ‘Justice System’; ‘inheritance tax (for the lucky 1%) is called the ‘death tax’; the Secretary of Defense is really the Secretary of War; the War on Drugs is actually the distribution of drugs; torture is enhanced interrogation while permanent war is clothed in the language of permanent peace (http://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2011/07/22/danny-weil-on-the-neo-liberal-language-of-ed-reform/). And thus the ‘end of poverty’ is really enhanced inequality and ‘philanthropy’ is ‘piracy’ for self-interests. The madness of it all.
As ‘Occupy Bob’, a guest writer for Dailycensored and activist so eloquently wrote:
“Sometimes it’s difficult for us who have so much to understand the connection between extreme poverty in other parts of the world and our excessive addiction to consumerism. The price paid can be seen in the photos below if you download. A planet not shared equitably devours itself. Sadly the children are the first innocents sacrificed. I don’t know how the 1% sleep at night, but then they probably don’t look at photos like these and allow their souls to be affected. I can only cry inside and then do whatever we are all doing to change these very horrible realities. Not to look is to die internally. Please share. Others have to see” (e-mail).
You, and Bill Gates, can see the Youtube of enslaved children worldwide at: (http://movimientossocialesgraciela.blogspot.com/2011/07/producir-barato-con-ninos-esclavos.html). Please take seven minutes of your time to view it and then pass it on to others.
The billions of the poor, enslaved and the oppressed need something more pragmatic and reasonable than phony creative capitalism to change the structures of their exploitation and erase inequality and poverty. What they need is a system that puts people before profit. And this can only mean overthrowing the social relations of capitalist oppression at a local, national and international level (http://www.marxsite.com/Idle_Dreams.html) and expropriating the expropriators.
