My son’s anger flooded the room. Three months of work, all of his papers, were wet. It was an accident. Water had leaked out of the water bottles in the back seat of the rental car. The bottom of his backpack was soaked. Although I could sympathize with his emotional distress, I had decades between me and the papers that I wrote when I was in college, which might still exist in some obscure box somewhere, but more likely are gone forever. After an hour of anguishing over the papers, he tossed them all out.

What Is Remembered Lives

Monuments, names, and institutions scream for our attention and for immortality in the minds of humanity, but over thousands of years most stories of individuals, communities, nations, and civilizations are lost. Languages cease to be spoken; the sense and meaning of words and symbols are forgotten. Mistakes are repeated, patterns emerge, technologies and cultures co-evolve, myths and legends are constructed and deconstructed while facts are obliterated. History is written by the winners, enhancing their legitimacy, erasing or obscuring those who challenge the reigning authorities. Witnesses to the truth and heretics eventually die.

September 11, 2001

Can you remember that day? That was the day the world changed and “The War on Terror” began in earnest, in a surreal fashion, brought to us live on television to sear into the public mind the awareness that our innocence was gone forever and needed to be replaced by a new preemptive “guilty until proven innocent doctrine.” I was more horrified to witness the media beating the drums of war than I was by the violent pulverization of thousands of people into dust.

January 8, 2002

We rallied in Justin Herman Plaza to march down Market Street and meet with Senator Feinstein’s staff and Senator Boxer’s staff to demand a Congressional investigation into 9/11. We witnessed the destruction of evidence, the cover-up, the CIA-directed joint House Senate Intelligence Oversight Committee’s Investigation into the September 11th Attacks. Attacked, ignored or ridiculed by the press, I began publishing Deception Dollars to overcome media censorship about the basic facts of 9/11 and to point towards the websites that challenged the official story, hoping to prevent the impending war on Iraq.

March 26, 2004

While the official Kean/Hamilton National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States—directed by Bush insider Philip Zelikow, author of the preemptive war doctrine—conducted its hearings, a San Francisco Citizens’ International Inquiry into 9/11 was held that raised questions that the official Commission failed to address, as well as analyzing the conflicting interests of those on the Commission. The final report of the Commission found no one to blame, no one to be held accountable. Based upon tortured confessions, the report supported the construction of Homeland Security, increasing the capacity of the state to suppress dissent at home and launch aggressive action abroad, including targeting Iran next.

9/11: Revealing the Truth, Reclaiming Our Future

In June, 2006, the 9/11 Truth Movement was acknowledged as a political reality by the corporate press, when hundreds gathered, rallied, marched and attended a conference in Chicago challenging not only the official 9/11 story, but also the increasing corporate and government assaults upon human and civil rights, Constitutional and international law, whistle-blowers and unfettered communications. Members of the Truth Movement ran for Congress on Truth and Impeachment platforms. One hundred years after Gandhi launched his campaign against unjust racist laws in South Africa in 1906, on September 11, 2006, the truth movement embraced the concept of “satyagraha,”—literally “truth force,” or “love in action” according to Martin Luther King Jr.—to integrate the truth movement with the global movements for peace and justice.

Truth Action – 9/11 Accountability Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth

In February of 2007, the 11th of the month street actions were initiated by Truth Action, inspiring and linking grassroots efforts of the Truth Movement across the United States and beyond—in Europe, Canada, Japan, and Australia. 9/11 Accountability was the theme of a conference held in Arizona. Researchers and filmmakers collaborated and contributed to a growing body of evidence, facts, and documents challenging multiple aspects of 9/11, chronicling the omissions and distortions of both the 9/11 Commission and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Report. Inspired by Bonnie Faulkner’s interview with David Ray Griffin on the destruction of the three World Trade Center buildings, Richard Gage, AIA, began investigating 9/11 and speaking out to architects, soon launching Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth.

Continuity of Government

Prior to the 2008 election, scholar and author Peter Dale Scott wrote and spoke in depth about the decades prior to 9/11 when Rumsfeld and Cheney were involved with planning for “Continuity of Government” in the event of a nuclear war or disaster, as well as strengthening the executive branch of government. When the nation went into “Continuity of Government” on the morning of September 11, 2001, Congress was kept in the dark about a number of issues, including the suspension of the Constitution and Congress’s ability to exercise any oversight over the executive branch. Under President Obama, the situation has not improved. Torture, rendition and assassination continue. The first target for assassination in Yemen, Anwar al-Awlaki, not only had ties to three of the alleged hijackers on 9/11, but also was invited to the Pentagon for lunch in the weeks that followed.

Forbidden Questions

The Project for a New American Century (PNAC), which was formed by Bush insider neocons to champion American hegemony, wrote that “absent some catastrophic and catalyzing eventlike a new Pearl Harbor,” the military transformation of the country, which they advocated, was likely to be a long one. The events of 9/11 conveniently expedited the rapid change that the neocons had wished for. Whether members of the Bush/Cheney administration/CIA/FBI/military enabled or participated in the attacks, whether the alleged hijackers were on the US payroll, or who could have deployed explosives to demolish the 47- story WTC 7—which was not hit by an airplane but collapsed late in the afternoon of September 11—these questions were not seriously addressed by the official investigations. Who profited, who had the means, the motive, who had the capacity to oversee multiple wargames that were being conducted on 9/11, who ordered a stand down of air defences, and who orchestrated the cover-up? What other intelligence agencies, entities, and foreign governments could have benefited from the attack, and subsequent “War on terrorism”? These questions and more have been explored in depth, by concerned citizens, researchers, scientists, pilots, and academics.

The historical evidence suggests that the US government is more likely than not to fabricate incidents and stage false flag operations to gain public support for wars. Truth is the first casualty of war, and with fewer and fewer media conglomerates controlling most media outlets, Orwellian doublespeak dominates the media, making it increasingly hard for the public to discern truth from fiction, and genuine threats from imagined threats. The Environmental Protection Agency lied to the public about the quality of the air at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks. First responders and witnesses have paid the price with their health and their lives. The events of 9/11 helped recruit Americans into the US military forces. The Bush administration and the media convinced the majority of soldiers that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11.

Nearly a decade after 9/11, there has been an ebbing of faith in government, military action, corporate power, and the media. Stolen elections, nuclear meltdowns, oil rig explosions, environmental catastrophes, the financial meltdown, bank bailouts, rampant foreclosures, the assaults upon food, air, water, land, labor, pensions, social programs, education, and human health—all the above have contributed to justifiable mistrust of the powerful institutions that favor the rich, the powerful, and the corporations.

The Toronto Hearings

On the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the International Hearings On the Events of September 11, 2001, will be held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. Considering that 9/11 has been used to launch an endless “War on Terrorism” as well as an assault upon international law and human and civil rights, the hearings will provide an important forum to examine the best evidence in the ten years since the 9/11 events occurred that challenges the U.S. government’s official investigations—which have been shown to be seriously flawed. Just as 9/11 lies have been used to pursue the 9/11 wars, the hope is that 9/11 truth will lead to peace and justice.

The International Center for 9/11 Studies, which has successfully gained the release of approximately four terabytes of video evidence from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is the main sponsor of the hearings; its main focus has been on the scientific understanding of the destruction of the three World Trade Center buildings.

The international effort is being spearheaded by scholars, scientists, and family members of WTC victims working together to examine the destruction of the World Trade Center, informed stock trading, air defense failures, the nature of state deception, and psychological resistance to accounts that challenge the official one.”

Graeme MacQueen is a member of the organizing committee for the Toronto Hearings. Born in Nova Scotia, he took early retirement from McMaster University to devote his energy to peace and justice work with a focus on the events and anomalies of 9/11. He received his Ph.D. in comparative religion from Harvard University and taught in the Religious Studies department of McMaster University for 30 years. In 1989 he became founding Director of the Centre for Peace Studies at McMaster, after which he helped develop the B.A. program in Peace Studies and co-directed (with $2 million in government, UN and NGO funding) peace-building projects in Sri Lanka, Gaza, Croatia and Afghanistan. He has also contributed to the development of the Women’s Peace Brigade in north India (active now in several states) and was involved for some years in the Third Option, a peace initiative for Afghanistan. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as four books.

He has specifically addressed the Peace Movement to urge them to overcome their psychological resistance to 9/11 and look at evidence challenging the official narrative. He has also written four articles for the Journal of 9/11 Studies, including “118 Witnesses: The Firefighters’ Testimony to Explosions in the Twin Towers.

We will explore the challenge of seeking truth, peace and justice—when military and corporate power combine to trump rational thought and all opposition—on the Community Currency Radio Show on Progressive Radio Network, Thursday, July 7, from 2-3 pm Pacific Standard Time, and archived online.

Perhaps our efforts and that of the Truth Movement are in vain, and will be buried or scattered like dust and forgotten. However, I am far too attached to my sons, my family, and this world to allow the erasure of reason, integrity, justice, freedom, and truth so that the military-industrial complex can have a war without end.
