Ah, the holiday season, a time when people gather in public places to shop and enjoy the warmth of humanity. What better time to educate people about the struggle in Palestine. One way to do this is by singing Christmas carols that, in the tradition of the IWW, have been modified with a purpose. Carolers are always welcomed in public places, like shopping centers. The North Coast Coalition for Palestine (nccpal.org) has sung O Little Town of Bethlehem at the local mall and successfully educated people during the holiday season.
Please take these songs and use them during your holiday celebrations. You’ll probably want to include some handouts for the details. Two of them follow traditional melodies while Santa Clause is Bring Apartheid Down (well, sorta) is sung to the melody the Crystals used on A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector . Enjoy.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem
With walls twenty-six feet high
Outside the holy family gathers
Watching The Star go by
In the dark streets below
The family must wait
For the young Israeli soldier
To open up the gate

For Christ is born of Mary
This sweet and frigid night
The family can’t reach the manger
Their I.D.s just aren’t right
Oh morning stars together
Celebrate the birth so great
If only the hold family
Could get in through the gate
How silently, how silently
The hold family waits
An early cock crows the dawn
As sunrise hits the gates
No ears to hear their pleas
There is no way to win
Of mighty guards of the checkpoint
Please soldiers let us in

Oh holy Child of Bethlehem
Trapped all round by the wall
How will we go forward in peace
How will we go at all
We hear the Christmas angels
Trumpet a joyous sound
Reminding us all once again
That all; walls do come down

Santa Clause is Bringing Apartheid Down (well, sorta)

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not shout
I’m telling you why
Santa Clause is coming to town
Apartheid’s going down
Santa Clause is coming to town
He’s making a list
& checking it twice
He’s gonna find out
Who’s naughty & nice
Santa Clause is coming to town
Apartheid’s going down
Apartheid is going down

He sees you when you’re planning
Just how you’ll make your buck
If you care for others
Or you really don’t’ give a
better watch out
You better not cry
You better not shout
I’m telling you why

Santa Clause is coming to town
Apartheid’s going down
Apartheid’s is going down

No gifts are destined to go
To companies that sell
Products made on stolen lands
That make life a living hell
No toys will come
It’s Santa’s duty
To Ahava, L’Oreal
& their stolen beauty
No Christmas for
RE/MAX
For selling people’s land
After Israel attacks
Empty stockings
For H-P too
For aiding the check points
In all that they do

Santa Clause is coming to town
Apartheid’s going down
BDS is bringing it down
You better be good
You better not lie
& we’ll live in peace
In the sweet by & by
(‘cause) Apartheid’s going down
BDS is bringing it down
BDS is bringing it down

When I Get Home for Christmas

I’m dreaming tonight of a place I love
Even more than I usually do
It’s a long way down freedom’s highway
But I’ll get back to you

I’ll be home for Christmas
Joyous bells will fill the air
When global law is honored
They’ll be smiles everywhere
I’ll be home for Christmas
You can greet me at the door
The day Israel obeys
Resolution 194

Christmas Eve will find me
Where love’s lights play
I’ll be home for Christmas
& I’ll be home to stay
Yes, I’ll be home to stay
