ALL OUT TO WASHINGTON DC! DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION

The power of the movement is its independence and its understanding that it speaks for the majority. The student movement lifted all of us. The marches, sit-ins, occupations and rallies reminded us that when we stand and fight together, we can win and, maybe just as importantly, restore our own sense of collective purpose, joy, hope and optimism. To move this new movement forward and to move forward the civil rights, immigrant rights, and labor movements, we need to march on Washington.

Date change for March on Washington: April 10, 2010 at Noon

For the last six months, Education Secretary Arne Duncan has cynically and dishonestly hidden behind the needs of poor, black and Latina/o students to receive equal, quality educational opportunities, to institute his controversial, unpopular and educationally indefensible plan to create a national network of 5,000 publicly-financed, privately-run, minimally-regulated charter schools.

Detroit Teachers Rebel against decades of degradation and the policies of Race to the Top

The Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) has not been much of a leader in working people’s organizations but this might be about to change. The main concern of the union over the years has been to basically protect the bloated salaries and privileges of the trade union executives, like Keith Johnson, the pathetic president of DFT. In fact, union executives have been openly working with the school authorities in Detroit to force hundreds, if not thousands, of experienced teachers to retire, so they can be replaced by a low-wage instructors, forced to work in charter schools without the slightest rights or input on how children are taught nor any control over curriculum or the day to day running of the schools.

What I will describe has been an ideological undertaking hatched in the back rooms of Wall Street in an effort to back hand the public. Schooling has now been transformed into a business plan and an ominous one at that, if one is interested in safeguarding anything public. The whole plan goes under many names: Charter Management Organizations, Profile Schools, the Diverse Provider Strategy and more. It is an idiomatic and thus ideological undertaking now, a Machiavellian Race to the Top in an effort to convince an unsuspecting community that public schools, the teachers, the unions, along with the students who inhabit them are cretins, or philistines in need of remediation or rehabilitation.

While many fleet vehicles have been manufactured to use the fuel, few will continue to do so since they are convertible to traditional fuel. […]
