In the following video (http://blip.tv/laborvideo/aft-pres-weingarten-supports-good-charters-merit-pay-and-attacks-utla-during-visit-to-sf-3538770, you can see what American Federation of Teachers, (AFT) President, Randi Weingarten had to say back in 2010 when asked what plan and strategy AFT had to fight privatization. The video is important for it sheds some history as to where we are and how we got here. In this […]
The success of the New Orleans “disaster capitalism” project in which the public school system was taken over by charter schools during the re-building after Katrina, has led to similar developments in other destitute places of the world. Haiti, is a prime example. International philanthropy is poised to rebuild the struggling country’s education system through loans […]
by Jordan Doorwall The staff of Central Falls high school in Rhode Island has been given a new lease on life, or so it seems. And so much like Shylock in the Merchant of Venice, they’ve been given a new religion to go with it. The symbolism is unmistakeable: teachers come back with the understanding that […]

I don’t agree with the ideology of charter schools and what they can do. I have been a proud BAMN student organizer in BAMN for at least 8 months now (since October, 2009 and present) and I’m doing my best to defend public education. Another thing about BAMN is that they support student activism; I do also!
Readers- As you know I have spent a great deal of time bringing you the news regarding the efforts of ‘By any Means Necessary’, or BAMN (www.bamn.com) and their efforts to stop privatization city by city, but especially in Detroit. I have done this for the purpose of letting readers know about the struggles against […]
With the successful march on Washington, April 10, 2010 in front of Arne’s cubbyhole and the recent victories handed to BAM and Detroit Schools, Arne Duncan and his cronies must have their underwear in a knot. City by city they had been having their way but now that the forces, mostly made up of students and teachers, are standing up to Race to the Top and catching whiff of the negative consequences of the flawed policy, Duncan must feel frustrated.
The hope we see is in students themselves as they step up to the forefront to fight for the vision of Dubois, not the criminality and shilling of Sharpton and Booker T. Washington politics of containment of surrender. Many stalwart organizers like Detroit students, DC students, and others see the prevarication and the low-expectation message of Race to the Top inscription on the tomb stones of their futures.
