Amuck

“Amuck,” a place to which we have truly run.   A first grader got arrested and put in Juvie because his mom sent along a dinner knife with his birthday cake so the teacher could cut pieces of it for his classmates.  Now the little guy is suffering PTSD for the nights he spent there.  Adolescents across the country are being arrested on child pornography charges for “sexting” provocative pictures of themselves to their friend’s cell phones or posting them on their Facebook page.

Or, how about this one?  “IMAGINE that for $33 a month you could buy Internet service twice as fast as what you get from Verizon or Comcast, bundled with digital high-definition television, unlimited long distance and international calling to 70 countries and wireless Internet connectivity for your laptop or smartphone throughout much of the country.”

Just when you thought healthcare was bad.  I am paying $130/mo just for a lousy, slow 5 gb max internet access and 900 anytime minutes on my cell phone.  Forget international calling.  AND, that is the best I can get in the Florida Panhandle, where I am building a house.  Did I forget to mention that the $33 bargain is what you would pay if you lived in France or almost anywhere else in the civilized world?

Don’t look for that coming to this country anytime soon.  Do you really think Verizon is going to give up their stranglehold anytime soon?  Maybe Google will save our day with their new phone if they can get the advertising rates the way they would like.  As for North Florida, there is the even bigger problem that the infrastructure simply doesn’t exist.

Because of the Republicans, posing as “Blue Dog Democrats,” the real Democrats can barely get a health care bill through congress.

AND, TALK ABOUT CENSORED, If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it…

Thousands gathered near the White House to spread their anti-war message.  Organizers said ten thousand people marched through downtown Washington, DC to demand an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“He is the same as presidents before him, spending our tax dollars on endless wars in the name of national security while people are anything but secure,” said Chevy Evangelista, a spokesman of New York-based Filipino American protesters.

“‘Arrest that war criminal!’ Sheehan shouted outside the White House before her arrest, referring to Obama.”

This last was from the on-line version of the N Y Times.  It was filed at 9:10 p.m. but not soon enough to get a single word in the Sunday printed edition, even though the protest occurred all day yesterday.

I give up.

Never give up, Ken. Here is an e-mail I got on a zero tolerance article I ran for dailycensored. I post it for it has all the details of the organization if you or anyone else chooes to follow up.

    Thanks, Ken

    Dear Danny,

Your story, “12 Year old gets the bracelets for doodling in school: Zero-tolerance and leave no child behind without cuffs,” was excellent and I just wanted to commend you for your work. It is often rare that such an every day occurrence, as shocking as it seems, would reach media attention. But this story represents what happens every day across the country, and contributes especially to the disproportionate rates of youth of color in detention. We are people who are working to address this, in the very juvenile justice systems that you named: Los Angeles, Calif., New York, Illinois.

We are a juvenile justice nonprofit based in San Francisco, called the W. Haywood Burns Institute, which works nationally on racial and ethnic disparities reform in the juvenile justice system. Among our scope is zero tolerance policies in schools. We’ve worked with counties to address this exact issue, by helping to develop pilot restorative justice projects, which means that in most cases of school fights, for example, the youth would instead be led through a restorative talking circle process at the school rather than being hauled away to detention. We have groups across the country you could speak to as a follow up related to solutions.

I also wanted to reach out and see if you were interested in speaking with me about potential follow-up stories related to racial and ethnic disparities in juvenile detention that result from zero tolerance policies and other minor infractions and misbehaviors. As you may be aware, a majority of youth in detention are “low-level offending,” which means they have made minor infractions. Two-thirds of all youth in detention are youth of color, who are often jailed for the same misbehavior for which White youth are released. This is the basis for the work that we do nationally, in collaboration in some localities with several foundations. Please let me know if you are interested in finding out more. We are preparing to release an interactive data map on our website near the end of the month that uses federal data to demonstrate racial and ethnic disparities on a state and county level.

Our executive director, James Bell, is an expert who is also happy to be utilized as a source for information and interviews. Thank you again for your work and please be in touch!

When considering security products, specifically for businesses, I have to concur with what you have said totally. There are so lots of choices on the market, it’s significant for a specialist to be aware what is greatestfor their situation and also specific construction. The observations you’re giving really are a great help to businesses and also security professionals similarly. Thank you again!
