REAL-ID Causing Problems in Florida

Two months ago, REAL-ID went into effect in Florida and many residents are having problems proving their identities to obtain the new driver’s licenses. Florida is one of the few states complying with the law as many states have said that REAL-ID is too expensive to implement and the federal government has extended the deadline several times.

To get a state ID or driver’s license, even if it is a renewal or replacement, you must come in armed with your original birth certificate or passport, Social Security card and two items mailed to you that contain your address.

This last part is very difficult to comply with for several Floridians because there are several towns, such as Mexico Beach or Crystal Beach, where everyone has a post office box and no physical address.

If you live at home with your parents, it is unlikely that you will have bills in your name. If the house bills are in your spouse’s name, you’ll have problems proving your address.

If your name has changed because of marriage or divorce, you must provide certified copies proving it.

You will also run into problems is someone has been married several times. You will need marriage, divorce, and/or death certificates in order to be compliant.

Those who make it through this document juggernaut become Real ID-compliant and get a tiny gold star on their licenses. At some point, this will be needed to go into a federal building or to board a commercial airliner.

Those looking for their IDs are getting extremely frustrated due to the difficulty in obtaining the proper paperwork.

But just as often people are confused, and don’t know what to do.

Like the woman born in 1951 whose birth certificate was destroyed in a hospital fire and couldn’t be found in state archives.

And the construction superintendent on the Interstate 4 Connector project and his wife. They left their birth certificates and marriage license in a safe deposit box back in Missouri.

Or the high school math teacher who insisted her 1958 birth certificate, also from Missouri, was the original.

“I’m sorry, ” Nieves says, feeling for the ridges of a stamp on the document, “but I’m not going to be able to take this. It has no seal.”

“Did they do seals back then?” asked an annoyed Jerry Curtiss of Brandon.

Like many of the others, Nieves turned her away.

“I can offer you the number for the vital statistics office in Missouri,” she offered politely.

“I’ve been here for over 20 years,” Curtiss said, “and I can’t get my license renewed because I don’t have a birth certificate.”

The ridiculous part is expecting every single DMV worker to know every single type of certification for all legal documents in every state. It is impossible to know which states have raised seals, ridges, or just a stamp. Some states also do not issue the original to citizens. You can obtain a copy of the original, but the original stays in your state of birth.

If any of these people are senior citizens, it may be difficult to obtain birth certificates at all. Many have kept a copy of their certificate, but for many different reasons, the original no longer exists. If their copy isn’t certified, they will be turned away.

If you were born at home, it is likely you were never issued a birth certificate either. If you were born in Puerto Rico, the state has said all birth certificates are no longer legal or valid as of July 1, 2010 and Puerto Ricans must obtain new ones. This has led to a lot of confusion that isn’t yet cleared up because most of the information is being passed on by word of mouth.

I truly pity the remaining Holocaust survivors living in Florida. It’s unlikely any of these have a birth certificate or would be able to obtain one. This would apply to naturalized citizens who passed all the federal checks to become a citizen, but don’t have a birth certificate because their country doesn’t issue them.

It’s not like terrorists can’t get legitimate papers. We’re supposed to believe that they are too stupid to circumvent this law, but they can have the knowledge needed to build and explode bombs.

Even if a person does obtain all the correct paperwork and gets their little gold star, explain how this is going to stop a homegrown terrorist?

All american members of the bilderberg group, the trilateral commission, the council on foriegn affairs, and the club of rome should be prosecuted for treason and publicly hung. too bad this is just about everyone in power or it would be done.
fight back, resist these crooks! its not immoral to commit crimes that oppose the police state, ie destoying cameras in public places, torching h1n1 signs, refusing to pay taxes, refusing to serve in the armed forces (until we are no longer waging unethical wars), tar and feathering politicians that only serve mega multinational corporations. spray paint everywhere you can slogans against the NWO to wake people up. vote only for independents. arm yourselves so that you can protect yourself (from crackheads not the govt) and not have to rely on someone else to keep you safe. do not capitulate to body scanners, DNA databanks, metal detectors, helicoptors that use technology to spy on you in your home, cops that will kill you for not doing whatever they say, people who want to deny you knoweldge, armed power high thugs that want to search you and grope your 13 year old daughters. resist resist resist.
keep glass bottles, a few gallons of gas, and some rags handy, they will be better then an AR-15, sks, or ak-47s against APCs.

  8. First up, this is a really informative article! I’ve got a big question nagging me, I really love the design of your site and tried to install the same design on my WP website. Stil, there is some kind of strange coding error in the footer. Do you have any tips, which version are you using? Please PM me on Twitter @HealthNSweets or via e-mail.

I, believe that our leaders in Washington DC are entitled to have their own personal REAL ID Card. We should protect those leaders because after
all they have free-will. You should continue to support those leaders who want a RFID cancer chip, and let them know to leave the rest of us alone.

    God Bless America !

  11. Rich says:

Is there a working effort in Florida to use the nullification method to stop Real ID like so many other states?

  12. Catf says:

Are people in Florida stupid? After reading this, the answer is yes. The Florida DMV is so stupid. I found your post when I googled “Florida DMV is so stupid.” It used to be a simple process but now they’ve turned it into a frustrating mess. I heard they’ve complicated the process, so I just renewed my driver’s license online to avoid that in person nonesense (it expires 2015 or 2016). Since it’s only a one time online only convenience renewal, I’m worried about my next in person renewal. I’m so worried that I don’t want to change my last name if I get married. I guess I won’t take my husband’s last name or I won’t get married. I guess that will be less women taking their husband’s last names. This new driver’s license documentation process is unfair to women (married and divorced women). When will these DMV dumba$$es stop inconveniencing people with their retarded nonesense? This is so freaking frustrating!! I want to scream!

      Hi Catf,

I cannot resist the tentation to reply to your comment: I just renew my license on 04/28/10 and under the new REAL ID Act that to tell you what I found all of the Florida entities are in completely disoriented state. You can asked different agencies and they will tell you their own knowledge of the LAW. I;m been reading and reading regards this issue because let me tell you what happened to me. I born in PR, we used both last names(married there too) we came here 12 yrs ago and our mother last names was cut from ID’s as USA only use 1 last name. I went to the agency brought all the documents (ID, SS, address verif., married cert and birth cert) well guess what? I forget that I already change my last name for my husband. Well they change my last name and now I carry my husband’s both last names. Meaning I’m his sister, LOL,LOL. No one in the respective agencies i have been get in contacted with gave me the place where in the REAL ID Act law says that if born outside the USA will now have to used last name, last name, name. As you refered I also asked, Is Florida the most incompetent people in USA? If someone outside Florida read this and they have no problem like me please let me know. I will not stop until I get a convincent answer. Please look on http://www.dmvflorida.org/driverlicense and see for yourself what a US Citizens need and specify that the name on ID MUST MATCH the one on SS card.
      Thanks,

Who can one write to regarding the problems this is causing? We really need to speak up and start writting letters to someone! I and my husband are having to spend a lot of money just to make our birth certificates acceptable due to our parents stupidity! I was born and raised here and have payed taxes and now I have to be treated like an alien! We still have rights and we need to speak up. At least to get extensions for those who are trying to get the proper ID. And what about the hundreds of people now driving with expired licenses? Ok I have so wanted to let off some frustration and I am so glad I found this site. I would appreciate any feedback. Blessings!

  17. John Daly says:

You can say that for sure, it’s called displacement of responsibility. Everyone thinks everyone else will say something and in the end no one says a word and the government gets away with the worst. We absolutely need to speak up, it starts with one person and I have actually already written about this…
