ADDICTIONS THERAPY IN POLITICAL PRACTICE: THE DETACHMENT OF OBAMA

obama detach 300x205 ADDICTIONS THERAPY IN POLITICAL PRACTICE: THE DETACHMENT OF OBAMAThere are many pundits, thinkers and bloggers wondering, if not obsessing, over the way Obama appears to have detached from the apparent reality of the American political landscape. The vast majority of voters are disgusted with the status quo and paralysis  in Washington.  The degree of disgust is at record levels. Pundit talk now is of a revolt of the voters against all current incumbents, regardless of party. This is not mere speculation. If the November Congressional mid-term elections were to be held today, what would be the Vegas line on 75% of incumbents being replaced? Even odds maybe. And this in an institution that has been historically heavily weighted in favor of the incumbent. How times change.

It would be good theory to propose that the public has finally clued in and are reacting to the dysfunctional federal government that now exists. Also good theory to consider that this public disgust is yet unfocused as to what has to be next step in the slow thinking process of the masses.

Who, then, is to blame? It has got be somebody.

Perhaps it is a function of the 24/7 news cycle that the public becomes so groggy from the constant hammering of the same tired media themes that it is only in the course of time that one so demonstrably idiotic gets to clear its head. The body politic is little persuaded by the nuances of ‘public option’, ‘filibuster’, ‘debt to GDP ratio’. The body politic rocks and rolls to the noise created by the likes of Foxnews, Palin, Jon Stewart etc., etc., those that have the loudest amplifier, preferably set to high bass mode.

It has taken a year of political dysfunction for the voters to realize that something wicked this way comes from Washington. It is now understood that America is in political gridlock. In a time of clear economic crisis it is further understood that this is not good and demands have now been sent out that things need to change.

Perhaps it is being played out this way:

Stage 1: Body politic is enamoured with the idea that things need to change, circa 2008
Stage 2: BP embraces message of change, hence the election of Obama
Stage 3: BP waits patiently for the change, as economy disintegrates, in a way dictating it for its Stage 2 decision
Stage 4: BP, as always irrationally impatient, grows impatient,  becomes confused and blames Obama
Stage 5: BP decides to throw all the bums out (see above)
Stage 6: BP finally realizes that government paralysis is due to majority party being unable to govern due to obstruction of the minority party. Here is an excellent take on that.
Stage 7: BP demands that government do something. Government does, passing jobs, health, environment, labour and fiscal laws
Stage 8 and beyond:  ?????

Returning to Obama’s seeming detachment as we reach Stage 5. Let us consider an analogy when the term ‘detachment’ is used.

In substance abuse and addictions treatment teachings, it is well established that the for those who live with anyone addicted to a substance, say alcohol,  they can not begin to heal either themselves or the addict without ‘detaching’. One has to look at the concept from both the view of the addict and those that are most effected by the addict, the immediate family.

‘Detachment’ involves lovingly and respectfully doing nothing either to assist or to resist the damaging actions of the addict. If the addict comes home drunk and falls asleep drunk in their own vomit on the toilet, you leave them there. You do not clean up after them. You do not call the boss when he can not come to work the next day.  Yet you do not scold, argue with, or berate them. You let it be. There will inevitably be consequences. The addiction will take its progressive toll on the addict, but not on you.

From the perspective of the loved one living with the addict, pain and fear can be converted to serenity by understanding that one has no control over the addict. Whereby one can find peace with oneself, as secure as possible in the knowledge that this detachment will be the best way to help the addict to come to the self-realization of the damage they are causing. Both the addict and the loved one can heal, free of violence anger and intransigence.

In the current world of American federal politics, Obama is the member of the immediate family and the Republican Party is the addict. The Republican Party has become addicted to ‘no’.  Drinking deeply from the fountain of obstructionism, they have become temporarily drunk from the equally temporary high of this consumption.  The Tea Party is like the bartender or co-dependent spouse, pouring it on.  An addiction is born.

What do you expect Obama to do in reaction to this damaging, hateful addict? To become angry? To attack back? To be as disrespectful to the drunken addict as the drunken addict is to him? What would that accomplish, expect for a bit of self satisfaction, the temporary congratulations in being able to ‘hit back’? That is not the answer. Obama is doing exactly what a victim of addiction should do, something that does not come easily, either in terms of grasping the concept or of practicing it.

The fear, hate and intransigence that is a product of the Republican addiction to obstructionism can only be productively met by detachment, in the model of addictions therapy. The addict will soon hit bottom, and either admit the problem and seek help to change his ways, or perish.

For a nation, perishing is not an option.

I appreciate the article for I too made a comparison with Arne Duncan and mental illness.

I think that the author is correct about the battering ram news media that continues unabated. But I also think that people have a lot on their plate right now and it is not food they recognize or that is organized or plated well.

No jobs, losing health care when you are sick, working two poorly paid jobs, losing your house, paying Pay Day loan debts on time, making sure the utilities don’t get turned off, having to brush the kid’s hair and then go to corporate food stores and see what your dollar can get you in terms of nutrition, finding adequate shelter and good schools. These are just a few of the items that most people have to face in this country and few if any have much understanding about how these issues are social issues not just personal ones.

No one is downloading the pain in real-time more than the Republicans but they are all supplicants – the two party system is one party with two wings and if one does not know this by now they have been asleep or watching old re-runs of Seinfeld.

The issue is how to change it. I have been reading lately much about the state of ‘disillusionment’ and I suffer from the pains that accompany it. But we must understand that this fight is historical, will not be won easily and will probably continue to sink to new lows.

This is why I write for dailycensored.com. I am no fool, as this author points out, I know people are hammered each and everyday with messaging from a piece of technology, the TV that wasn’t even a part of my home when I grew up until I was six.

The answer, of course, is critical thinking about these issues and understanding how to think critically about them. But this is not taught in the brain drain they call schools, is it? No, in fact discouragement to think is the prevalent monster and thinking now has become subversive.

So we soldier on, and take the victories we can now as we strategize for what will be another economic meltdown. The raw issue is capitalism, it is a system run for profit not for people. Profit comes first all the time and when people get to understand the accompanying narrative and how immoral it is and how bankrupt free market fundamental capitalism is, they will revolt. I am confident. Disillusionment is not an option; we can’t afford it now!

I hate to break it to you, but the powers that be can do anything that they want whenever they want. The games being played right now are intended to cause further division and distract the people from the real causes of our problems, like blatant looting of the public by the government to enrich “our” representatives’ benefactors in the military industrial complex, the prison industrial complex, the banking and insurance industries, the health care and pharmaceutical cartels, etc. It has become a nation of, by and for the ruling elite, and the only thing that they really worry about is widespread revolt.

If you want to know how those in government get away with violating our rights and ignoring our wishes, see Why Does the Government Ignore Our Wishes? at http://dailycensored.com/2009/09/11/why-does-the-government-ignore-our-wishes/ and don’t miss my 18 minute speech.

If you take a look, you’ll learn why they get away with violating our rights, abusing their power, and committing horrible crimes. My article on torture includes a link to the U.S. Supreme Court case which explains how one of our stolen rights makes the difference between justice and injustice, between freedom and slavery.

The problem is not capitalism, it is American style capitalism. Capitalism is an engine of wealth, but it needs brakes. China seems to have gotten it right in terms of a mix of capitalism and regulation.

This is an excellent analysis, well crafted. I agree that Obama’s actions are the right way to go in terms of dealing with junkie Republicans. He could pull it off to, with resounding success. But there’s something lacking. The other half of the equation, well the other 80% is more like it is simply this. Obama has to do something for the people who are struggling. No need to recite the troubles. But consider this, as Jane and John Q Public see it.

The banks have received $14 trillion in cash and credit. That’s unimaginable. It’s the equivalent of one year’s GDP for the U.S. What have the people received in terms of help? Not a damn thing. That’s why they’re mad. The people who caused the problem have been rewarded for their actions with trillions of dollars, from the very people who are the victims of these incompetents. Lets take a behavioral stance for a moment. What does a difficult subject do when you reward the difficult behavior. The subject continues with the negative behavior. Get ready for more from Wall Street.

Obama was selected and supported by the investment banking community to calm the masses while Wall Street continued to loot the Treasury. While he’s exceptionally skilled at diversion, that only works when you’re right on the substance – the economy and social justice. He’s not and he is very likely incapable of being right. He is indifferent to the masses, everybody but the 10,000 or so investment bankers who got $150 billion of bonuses in 2009. Obama says he doesn’t “begrudge” the wrecking crew their big salaries. Is he completely clueless? Apparently so.

You correctly distilled Obama’s stance toward the Republicans. But you’ve missed the most important piece – he’s inept and negligent in serving the people, all 300 million of them, while, at the same time, he’s filling the trough for even more looting. It’s a shame but a predictable one.

I am not so sure that Obama is so far removed from the masses. Look where he came from, the community he served for so many years after an Ivy League education.

Addictions therapy takes time. Time is the singluar most important ingredient.

In time, the right wing obstructionism will create its own self-destruction. A political party, serious in its desire to win at the ballot box, can only tolerate so may of the fringe element. Look at the CPAC meeting, berift of any real ideas, immersed in its own theories of hate and conspiracies. How long can that kind of Libertarian/Tea Party/ Republican stew remain palatable?

When the right wing implodes (see failure of Jobs Bill fillibuster), there will be a large window of opportunity for Obama and Congress to pass needed electoral and economic reforms that they were elected to implement.

    Patience.

P.S. I very much enjoy the articles you have posted here in the past.

I’ve often thought that the reality of the political world must be a lot like the reality of the entertainment industry. In both, well-known faces are actually phony facades carefully glued in place while in public (but which occasionally slip). These masks are designed to fool the ignorant, unaware masses who have no inkling of the dark, Machiavellian scrambling and brass-knuckled brawling that goes unreported and occurs (mostly) out of sight.

Who but a fly on the Oval Office wall knows the truth of what Obama has experienced since taking office? Clearly, he could never have been elected if he wasn’t extremely proficient at “playing the game.”

Unlike the brain dead Bush Baby who was handed the Presidency by Mum and Daddums, Obama “earned” the office through strategizing, politicking, making promises (some of which he must have known he’d never keep), playing hard-ball with some while soft-peddling others, and presumably having innumerable compromises forced upon him.

Continuing the politics-as-Hollywood analogy: even now, 20 years after her death, we still Love Lucy despite the fact that behind the scenes, Lucille Ball was a foul-mouthed, hard-as-nails taskmaster who was quite often as nasty as shit to her “underlings.” But whether they loved or hated her, most of Ms. Ball’s employees admired the intense dedication and long hours she spent making an intricately choreographed sight gag appear effortlessly spontaneous. And whether from ignorance, naivete, or the close-mindedness necessary for hero worship, the general public still knows little if anything of the real-life Lucille Ball-Buster. (Or, as Johnny Carson once introduced her at a Friar’s Roast, “Lucille Testicle.”)

It’s with this in mind that I often wonder who Barack Obama REALLY is when the Oval Office doors are closed. More frightening is the question of what bizarre, soul-wrenching situations he’s faced since becoming not only the President of Our Divided States, but also the first African-American to assume that title. We’d be shocked and amazed, I’m sure.

I’d LOVE to know, for example, what’s the REAL story behind the Big Pharma deal and why did it occur so early in the health care reform timeline ? And why is his administration so packed with Bush-era leftovers? Must he not be quietly pleased at Sarah Palin’s meteoric stardom knowing she can only slam to earth in 2012 and thereby cause the extinction of the tyrannical dinosaur party, Republicanus Rex ?

Instead, all we can glean about Obama’s character, motivations and methods must come from what little we’re able to observe, and he’s very media savvy. His performance at the livecast health care brawl was exceptional (especially when you remember his terminally tongue-tied predecessor) but was it good enough to cause true reform ?

He seems to have unshakeable belief in his oratorical skills yet (due in part to the selective editing of Faux News et al) it seems like his speeches have only a spotty record of success.

His intellect seems like a long, cool drink of water after 8 year of the Bush brain drought, but is Obama aware that many Americans seem to be turned OFF by all his professorial umming and ahhhing ? . . . (which seems to me like a tactic to provide more time to carefully choose his words.)

A few, brave websites like DailyCensored constantly remind us of the sad fact that behind all the glossy political pageantry which the majority of Americans gobble up as “The Truth,” there is, more often than not, a dark labyrinth of lies and double-dealing.

Nixon was the first President whose lies — and thus, his true character — were revealed while he was in office. Clinton is a distant second thanks to the indelible impression of a semen-stained dress. (In this contest, Harding’s hemmorhage could be called a blessing.)

However, because I struggle to find any sense of security in this insanely uncertain world, I’d dearly love to know NOW the truth of Obama’s character, wisdom and accomplishments. It will probably be many years from now — if at all — before the real story is told.

In the meantime, I have to fall back on the shaky faith that the detachment this article describes — and the aura of incrutability it creates — are sure signs that Obama really is the poker-faced master manipulator who can actually haul our country back from the abyss into which it seems all too eager to jump. Or maybe it’s a sure sign I’m just another spiral-eyed Kool-Aid guzzler ?

One night, long ago, I was in D.C. and met someone who’d worked in the White House for many years. This person told stories in a wonderfully oblique yet crystal-clear way about how, for example, of all the First Ladies he’d met, Barbara Bush was hands-down the MEANEST of all. Some Ladies, it was inferred but never said, had been snobbish, some had been vain and self-absorbed. But ol’ Granny Bush, it was said without saying it outright, seemed to go out of her way to make the people around her miserable.

Unfortunately, with no psychic powers or gossipy insiders to provide insight about Obama, all I have to fall back on is my faith — which I’d trade in a heartbeat if I could be magically transformed into a fly on the Oval Office wall.

And even if Obama plucked me out of thin air and killed me as he the fly buzzing around him during a TV interview, at least I’d die with a solid clue to his true nature.
