American Mantra: Free Market Capitalism and Obama

American Mantra: Free Market Capitalism and Obama

American Mantra: Free Market Capitalism and Obama
By Peter Phillips
Free Market Capitalism remains the dominant American ideological truth. The decline of communism opened the door for unrepentant free marketers to boldly espouse market competition as the final solution for global harmony. According to the American mantra, if given the opportunity to freely develop, the marketplace will [...]

Need to Reestablish Seperation of Power in DC

Need to Reestablish Seperation of Power in DC

No other nation has been more concerned about the segmentation of governmental power than the United States. The Founding Fathers fractured it in innumerable ways. They asserted that all power derives from the consent of the governed, the federal and state constitutions act as distribution grids —apportioning authority between the federal government and the fifty [...]

The new call for full body scanners

The new call for full body scanners

No one really wanted full body scanners. There were numerous talks of invasions of privacy and viable cases of abuse of that privacy. Today, however, the pantsbomber has made that discussion return to the forefront, with many people readily giving up their privacy because they now feel that the government knows what they’re [...]

And The Answer Is…

And The Answer Is…

I have analogies filling my head.  I am reminded of the frog swimming in the kettle of water on the stove.  He doesn’t notice the water is getting warmer until it is too late.  There are 27 million Americans who are either unemployed or underemployed.  Forty-two percent (42%) of the wealth in this country is [...]

Detroit Public Schools: Canary in the Coal Mine of Public Education

Detroit Public Schools: Canary in the Coal Mine of Public Education

What was once a prospering manufacturing city has now been brought to its knees by the policies of neo-liberalism and late stage capitalism. In an article in Time Magazine, September 24, 2009 entitled “Detroit: The death – and possible life – of a great city”, the author, Daniel Okrent states the real problem succinctly: By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit’s treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services. The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers’ union to reject a philanthropist’s offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That’s worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent
