Glenn Ford writes on his Black Agenda Radio commentary that in an ideological effort to attack Los Angeles teachers the city school board has voted to transfer one-third of its schools to private hands. Ford calls this ‘Corporate outsourcing now passes as education policy.’ Obama’s ploy may be the biggest one-time giveaway of public school property in US history. One treacherous aspect of the Obama scheme is that private charter schools in California don’t have to hire union teachers. When Bush’s regime took over the schools system in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, the charter privateers have ruined accountability for the education system. Now it is expected that in Los Angeles novices will replace teaching verterans. When the Democrat Party imposed charter schools in Obama’s hometown of Chicago, it led to the disproportionate firing of Black educators who were replaced mostly by young white teachers who were not from Chicago. Another aspect to this story is the buildings of the public schools (including multi-millions of dollars in brand new buildings) are being taken out of public hands and given away to private contractors. This is the ‘hope’ and ‘change’ we can expect from Barack Obama.
