Proposition 2

This was shot from the manure pit looking up into the several battery cages that house laying hens.

As most Californians should know by now, Prop 2 was passed on Nov. 4.  I think this is really great, as of course it means that farm animals raised in CA for food will be given a bit more “comfort” and space.  But on a different note, I also feel hurt that it has taken us this long to deliver such a simple, humane allowance for those we so selfishly breed and raise to satisfy our own desires.  Since I am refraining now from going into a plea for all to go vegan, I will turn toward a more informative direction regarding this issue.  If you go to the site http://www.yesonprop2.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=96&Itemid=114 you will find the many questions that most people have about this recently approved proposition, and how it will change the world of farming in our state.

This Prop will not do anything except cost the state of California money. I don’t know about you, but I am a student. The state is having to make huge budget cuts on things like education and other services because the state is not making money. Actions like prop two (although admirable and something that should be a common practice) hurt the state because it will drive farmers out and the revenue that they give along with it. I understand that people get upset about how SOME (key word some, not all) of the farm animals were being mistreated, but the buyer does have a choice. If you know that chickens from farm A are being mistreated then buy your eggs and chicken from Farm B. The Key here is the revenue that you sacrifice when you pass legislation like this. Many farmers will have to leave the state. You also now will pay a higher price for your goods because production of things like eggs will be down. Simple supply and demand.
My last point will be that animal mistreatment will still happen. Guess whats going to happen. Farmer A is going to move to Nevada and mistreat his chickens there and then ship them to you here in good old CA and charge you more. Bottom line is prop two only hurts you. The only things that it helps are some of the animals which in the end….im still going to eat.
